BP Oil Spill, BP Oil Spill Cleanup Workers BLOG POST

As the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill’s Ninth Anniversary of April 20, 2010 is coming soon, clean-up workers and coastal residents’ health still suffer today

Although BP is spending millions on advertising telling everyone the Gulf Coast is fine, it is not. The impact of the nation’s largest environmental disaster is continuing to hurt the Gulf Coast’s environment, economy and its people’s on-going health.

The clean-up workers, thousands of local Gulf Coast residents and the thousands that came to help the Gulf Coast clean up the oil from the Deepwater Horizon are getting sick and are increasingly becoming aware now of the link between this disaster and their poor health. The clean-up workers and local coastal residents were not properly informed or protected from the hazards of both the oil and the dispersant chemicals used, and now they are suffering. Common conditions include:

  • Respiratory problems
  • Rashes and skin problems
  • Ear, nose and throat problems
  • Vision problems
  • Chemical burns
  • Gastroenterological (stomach) problems
  • Dizziness & Neurological problems
  • and others
  • High blood pressure

These medical conditions the clean-up workers and coastal residents are suffering from are a result of exposure to dangerous chemicals including: Crude Oil, Benzene, Corexit 9500, 9527 (chemicals used to thin out the oil) and many others.

This is not a question of did this happen or not; it did and the courts agree. On January 11, 2013 the District Court entered final approval of the Medical Benefits Settlement for the clean-up workers of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This Court approval gives the oil spill workers and coastal residents financial compensation for the injuries they suffered due to the oil spill clean-up exposure. Claims processing begins soon.

The BP oil spill clean-up workers are only one of several groups of people medically affected by the oil spill, residents were affected too. More suits and settlements are out there and will follow despite BP telling everyone that the Gulf Coast is fine.
