Florida Attorneys Help You Get Medical Benefits for Sinus Issues Following the 2010 Gulf Coast Oil Spill

Many people have experienced increased medical problems

The Deepwater Horizon disaster has taken a terrible toll on a region that is all too familiar with hardship and tragedy. The collapse of the oil rig at the Macondo well site resulted in the release of 170 million gallons of noxious oil. More than 2 million gallons of dangerous dispersants were used to try to break up the oil slick. The full health hazards that cleanup workers and average residents of the Gulf Coast faced are not yet fully understood.

The Downs Law Group represents people who have been harmed by the BP oil spill. Medical conditions, such as sinus issues, have become prevalent following the 2010 spill. Many people, especially cleanup workers and residents, have a right to compensation of which they may not be aware. If you have developed respiratory problems after the oil spill, our firm can advise you on your legal options.

Which conditions are covered by the British Petroleum compensation fund?

The BP compensation fund was established to grant reimbursement for medical expenses and other damages that residents and cleanup workers endured. Medical conditions covered include:

  • Chronic rhinosinusitis — Chronic rhinosinusitis is inflammation of the nasal passages that lasts at least three months, despite medical treatment.
  • Reactive airways dysfunction syndrome — This condition is sometimes characterized as asthma that results from chemical irritation.
  • Chronic contact dermatitis — This form of skin irritation is a rash that develops and reoccurs at a site that came in contact with chemicals or harmful substances.
  • Chronic eczematous reaction — A chronic eczematous reaction is an itchy, uncomfortable skin irritation that occurs in various places following exposure to chemicals or oil.

Medical language and the legal requirements for a claim can seem confusing at first. Our lawyers can clearly explain the requirements if you want to learn more about the BP compensation fund.

What symptoms must also be present?

Certain symptoms must accompany a diagnosis of any of the chronic conditions covered. Chronic Rhinosinusitis must also include evidence of:

  • Anterior or posterior mucopurulent drainage
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Facial pain, pressure or fullness
  • Decreased sense of smell
  • Objective evidence of sinus mucosal disease on CT imaging or endoscopic examination

Reactive airways dysfunction syndrome also requires that certain symptoms accompany the diagnosis. Those symptoms include:

  • A positive methacholine challenge test finding or a finding from a similar test
  • The absence of pre-existing respiratory disease or asthma
  • Exclusion of other causes and symptoms

If you believe your sinus problems are related to the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, don’t let confusing requirements and lists of symptoms stop you from pursuing a claim for your injuries. Our lawyers work closely with you to ensure you are fully aware of the claim’s requirements.
