Negligence has led to many health problems along the Gulf Coast.

The oil slick that followed the collapse of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform extended throughout the Gulf of Mexico and affected shorelines in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Oil permeated beaches and bayous, and continues to be found in certain places in spite of determined cleanup efforts.

The full ramifications of the oil spill on public health in the Gulf Coast states are not yet fully understood. Exposure to oil and the chemicals used to disperse the spill has a number of dire medical consequences, including short- and long-term stomach problems.  If you have experienced health problems after the oil spill, our attorneys are prepared to be of service to you.

Statistics suggest a large spike in health problems in Gulf Coast States

It is established that humans exposed to crude oil and the chemical compounds used in oil dispersants are at risk for significant short and long-term health effects. Evidence points to the conclusion that workers and volunteers who responded to the disaster and other people along the Gulf Coast are experiencing a larger than average number of health problems:

  • A nonprofit organization that surveyed Louisiana residents found that nearly 75 percent of those who were exposed to oil believe they are suffering from unusual medical problems.
  • Studies of those along the Gulf Coast have found that as many as 60 percent might be suffering from physical symptoms or mental stress.
  • Exposure to crude oil has been linked to DNA damage in humans.

Both crude oil and other chemicals, because of their toxicity, have been proving to be extremely damaging to humans who have had contact with them.

More than 170 million gallons of oil and millions more of dangerous dispersants were released into the Gulf of Mexico following the destruction of the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform in 2010. Evidence suggests that these toxic substances cause long-term health problems for anyone exposed to them.
