Florida Law Firm Fights for Victims of the BP Gulf Coast Disaster in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas, as Well
Negligence has deeply harmed the Gulf Coast and its people
An explosion at the Deepwater Horizon oil-drilling platform on April 20, 2010 took the lives of 11 crew members and marked the start of an 87-day period during which oil flowed unabated into the Gulf of Mexico. The toxic flow of oil into the Gulf poisoned enormous amounts of sea life, the coastline and the air and water in surrounding communities in Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida. It is the largest offshore oil disaster in U.S. history.
People who had their lives and jobs impacted by the 2010 oil spill are entitled to compensation for the damages they have endured. The Downs Law Group is a law firm working on behalf of people affected by the disaster. We fight for those harmed by the medical and economic consequences of the BP spill. If your business or your health has been affected by the BP oil spill, it’s in your best interest to consult with our legal team about your legal options.
Who is entitled to compensation?
A settlement reached between the federal government, British Petroleum and other companies associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill established that several groups of people are entitled to recover monetary damages from a BP compensation fund. Residents along the Gulf Coast who live in what courts have classified as Zone A or Zone B and who can demonstrate that they were sickened by the effects of the oil spill or suffered property damage are allowed compensation through a fund established for victims of the disaster. Residents in these zones must demonstrate one or more specific medical conditions that have caused damage to their:

Those people who bravely volunteered to help clean up the shoreline are also entitled to submit claims for injuries related to the spill. In the wake of the disaster, more than 100,000 individuals worked tirelessly to restore the Gulf Coast. Countless people were directly exposed to crude oil, benzene and other harmful chemicals. Those who have developed physical symptoms following their efforts can also submit claims for medical benefits to a court-ordered fund. Medical conditions covered include:

Which areas qualify as Zone A or Zone B?
One way people qualify for compensation has to do with where they live. For the purposes of the fund established to compensate residents, those who live in Zone A generally reside within a half mile of the coastline in Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas or Florida. To qualify, a claimant must demonstrate at least 60 days of residency between April 20, 2010 and September 30, 2010.
Areas that are classified as Zone B are wetland areas within one mile of specific locations in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Florida. As with Zone A residents, those in Zone B must demonstrate at least 60 days of residency between April 20, 2010 and September 30, 2010 in order to qualify. At the Downs Law Group, our knowledgeable legal team can provide more information on filing a claim.
