Florida Lawyers Fight for Residents Harmed by the BP Oil Spill
Local parents and children have seen a spike in health problems along the Gulf Coast since the accident
The 2010 BP oil spill is one of the worst disasters the South has ever experienced. Oil and dangerous concentrations of chemicals persist in parts of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida years after the blowout at the Macondo well site in the Gulf of Mexico. Many residents have reported chronic, pervasive medical problems in communities along the water. Children have been some of the hardest hit, and many exhibit symptoms of chemical poisoning.
Although residents may believe their illnesses are directly related to the oil spill, many may be deterred from taking action because of the confusing process for receiving compensation. The Downs Law Group represents local residents who have been hurt by the negligence of the companies operating the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform. If your property has been damaged or you have developed health problems, our attorneys can advise you about your specific legal options.
What symptoms have the people on the Gulf Coast experienced?
Long-term studies of the effects of oil and dispersants on residents are underway. Many living along the coast and bayous of the region have reported:

The damage to the health of locals living near the Gulf of Mexico has been severe, and has earned the nickname “Gulf Coast Syndrome” or “BP Syndrome.” The effects on future generations could be even worse. The possibilities for cancer or genetic damage to infants or children are not yet fully known.
What medical benefits are available to Gulf Coast residents?
Currently, the BP compensation fund grants money to locals who live in areas designated Zone A or Zone B. People who qualify for Zone A generally live within a mile of the shoreline. Those who live in Zone B reside in bayous or marshy areas along the water.
The amount of compensation available for medical benefits varies, depending on the symptoms and conditions. Conditions are divided into two large categories:
- Acute conditions — Illnesses related to the spill that did not require hospitalization are eligible for $900. Other illnesses that required hospitalization could qualify for as much as $5,450 if properly documented.
- Chronic conditions — Chronic conditions are those that persist for long periods after the spill. Residents in Zones A and B can receive as much as $36,950 if they are found to qualify.
Other monetary compensation also applies if a victim was hospitalized for a certain period of time. Not all applications for reimbursement are approved, and many individuals do not qualify for the full amount available.
